Advice for High-Price Sapphire Purchase and Appraisal
Gems degrade over time, so it is ideal to sell them as early as possible. With the current high market prices for gold and platinum, now is a great time to sell accessories with gemstones. Sapphires are gemstones with a wide range of color variations. Among them, pink sapphires and padparadscha sapphires are highly rare and fetch high prices in the market.
Factors that Determine the Value of Sapphires
Color
Sapphires and rubies are both varieties of the mineral corundum, which is composed of aluminum oxide crystals. The red variety is called ruby, while all other colors are referred to as sapphire. Blue sapphires, particularly those with a velvety, deep medium to dark blue color, are considered the most valuable. The finest blue sapphires, known as 'Royal Blue,' have been cherished by the British royal family. Sapphires with this color command the highest price per carat. Blue sapphires often display color zoning, making those with a uniform, rich blue tone rare and highly sought after. However, if the color is too dark, the stone may lose its brilliance in low light, making the balance of tone crucial. Sapphires come in a variety of colors, with the highly rare 'Padparadscha Sapphire,' a mix of pink and orange hues, being particularly prized among collectors.
Clarity
The value of sapphire heavily depends on its transparency. Typically, inclusions reduce the value, but an exception is the "Star Sapphire," which displays a star-shaped light effect caused by rutile needle inclusions. These are especially highly valued.
Carat
Although sapphires belong to the same corundum family as rubies, larger sapphires are generally more accessible compared to rubies. However, high-quality blue sapphires exceeding 5 carats are rare, and their value increases significantly with size.
Cut
Blue sapphires often exhibit 'color zoning,' where different shades of blue appear within a single stone. Skilled cutters carefully consider these variations to craft a cut that showcases the most beautiful coloration on the surface. The color and brilliance of a sapphire are significantly influenced by the quality of the cut, with higher-quality cuts enhancing its value.
Treatment
Typically, sapphires undergo heat treatment to enhance their natural beauty, increasing the vibrancy of their color. Most sapphires available on the market have been heat-treated. On the other hand, sapphires that have undergone diffusion treatment are valued less. Untreated sapphires are exceptionally rare, and those certified by institutions like GIA hold even greater value.
Origin
Discovered in 1881 in the mountainous regions of Kashmir, on the border of India and Pakistan, sapphires known as 'Cornflower Blue' are highly prized for their vivid and delicate blue color. Today, these sapphires are extremely rare and are renowned for their refined elegance. Myanmar (formerly Burma) is another prominent source, producing large sapphires with rich, deep blue hues. Among these, the 'Royal Blue' sapphires, considered the finest quality, are particularly celebrated. Additionally, Sri Lanka and Madagascar are notable sources of top-grade sapphires, each region offering unique characteristics and value to the gemstones they produce.
The criteria for evaluating Sapphires?
Sapphire Quality Evaluation
Sapphires are evaluated based on several factors, including color, clarity, and carat. Among these, color has the most significant impact on the sapphire's value.
Sapphire Treatment
Most sapphires undergo heat treatment to enhance their color. Natural sapphires with beautiful colors in their untreated state are rare and, therefore, highly valued.
Sapphire Origin
Major sources of sapphires include Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia (Pailin), and Madagascar. Kashmir sapphires, especially the 'Cornflower Blue,' and Myanmar sapphires, particularly the 'Royal Blue,' are highly regarded.
Color of Sapphires with High Price Purchase Evaluation
Blue Sapphire
Blue sapphires are the most valuable among sapphires. 'Cornflower Blue' from Kashmir and 'Royal Blue' from Myanmar are particularly expected to fetch high prices.
Padparadscha Sapphire
Other sapphires that are not blue are called fancy-color sapphires. Padparadscha sapphires, which have a unique color between pink and orange, are rare and highly valued.
Pink and Purple Sapphire
These sapphires contain less chromium than rubies. Compared to rubies and blue sapphires, they generally have a lower resale value.
Yellow and Orange Sapphire
These sapphires are more commonly found, so they tend to be priced lower than other sapphires. However, yellow sapphires that appear golden, known as 'Golden Sapphires,' are rare and often fetch higher prices.
Rare Color-Change Sapphire
Sapphires that change color, such as shifting from purple or green to yellow, are also highly sought after and can be sold for higher prices.

02 Latest appraisal equipment of Otakaraya
UV-Visible Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer
When visible light (light that can be seen by the human eye) passes through a substance, some of the light is absorbed by the material. The UV-Visible Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer is excellent at analyzing the wavelengths of the absorbed light. At 'Otakaraya,' this instrument is used to inspect treatments applied to diamonds and the treatments on gold-based white pearls, allowing for accurate assessment of the gem's value.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer
The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer is a precision instrument that analyzes samples by shining infrared light onto them and measuring the transmitted or reflected light. At 'Otakaraya,' this equipment is used for a wide range of tests, including examining the presence of resin impregnation treatments in jade and conducting specific tests on diamonds.
Type I and Type II Determiner
The sample is placed inside the determiner, and ultraviolet light is applied to assess the diamond by its transmission rate. In just one second, the device can determine whether the diamond is Type I (natural diamond) or Type II (high-temperature, high-pressure treated diamond or synthetic diamond). The device can assess both loose diamonds and diamonds set in a setting, allowing for measurement without removing the stone from the setting. It provides quick and accurate evaluation without damaging your items.
Moissanite Determiner
After cleaning the surface of the gemstone, the probe is applied to the sample. The electrical conductivity measured by the device is used to determine whether the stone is a diamond or moissanite. Similar to the Type I and II determiner, it provides instant and accurate assessments.
03 Evaluation of Design and Brand Value
At Otakaraya, we not only assess the intrinsic value of the gemstones themselves but also take into account the brand value and design when determining the appraisal value. We ensure that even small gemstones are thoroughly evaluated, and we can offer a purchase regardless of whether the item has accessories or a box.
04 All Fees Are Free for Purchase
Appraisal fee is completely free, with no burden placed on the customer. We offer a variety of purchasing methods, including, in-store, and email appraisals.

About Sapphire Certificates
Certificate of Authenticity / Certificate of Origin
When purchasing an sapphire, a certificate of origin and type, which indicates the origin and nature of the stone, is usually provided. If you have this certificate, please bring it along when selling the gemstone. However, at Otakaraya, we accept purchases even without a certificate of authenticity or origin, so there is no need to request a reissuance.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Sapphire Purchase
When is the best time to sell diamonds?
The best time to sell diamonds can vary. Sometimes, the right opportunity arises quickly, while at other times, holding onto them for a longer period can increase their value. It is difficult to pinpoint a universally ideal time. If you plan to keep your diamonds for a longer duration before selling, it is essential to store them properly. We recommend using appropriate storage methods and performing regular maintenance to preserve their condition.
Can I sell diamonds without a certificate?
Yes, you can. Our appraisers will evaluate the diamond 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut) and provide you with a purchase price.
Does the design affect the purchase price?
For gemstone purchases, the grade of the diamond itself is crucial. Even with an older design, Otakaraya ensures a high-value purchase, so you can rest assured.
Does the shape of the diamond affect the purchase price?
Yes, the purchase price varies by shape. The "round brilliant cut" is the most highly valued cut for diamonds. The purchase price also changes depending on the diamond's grade, so feel free to take advantage of our free appraisal service.
Do specialty gemstone purchase shops offer higher prices?
At Otakaraya, we handle a wide range of items, including diamonds, gemstones, jewelry, gold, precious metals, branded items, and watches. This extensive sales network allows us to avoid holding excess inventory, enabling us to offer the highest possible prices for your items.
Can melee diamonds (pavé diamonds) be purchased?
Yes, they can be purchased. Jewelry adorned with melee diamonds (pavé diamonds) may receive a higher appraisal value. However, loose stones may not be eligible for purchase.
