Advice for High-Price Emerald Purchase and Appraisal

Gemstones degrade over time, so it is ideal to sell them as early as possible. Given the high market prices for gold and platinum right now, it is a good timing to sell accessories with gemstones. Emeralds tend to have relatively more inclusions, and their value can vary greatly depending on the inclusions. To avoid missing out on their true value, it is important to choose a purchase store with expert knowledge.

Factors that Determine the Value of Emeralds
Color

Emeralds, cherished as green gemstones for centuries, have their value primarily determined by color. Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl, with beryllium (Be) as its main component, and exhibit their beautiful green color due to chromium and vanadium. The most highly valued emeralds feature a vivid bluish-green to pure green color, with an even tone being considered the finest. The deeper the color, the higher the evaluation, but stones that appear too dark, almost black, may be valued lower.

Clarity

Emeralds are gemstones that almost always contain inclusions. Therefore, those with fewer inclusions and higher transparency are rare and valuable. An exception to this is the Colombian "Trapiche Emerald," which features a unique crystal pattern. In this case, the inclusions themselves are considered part of the charm and are traded at high prices.

Carat

The value of an emerald increases with its size, but it is important that other factors such as color and transparency are also well balanced. For example, even if an emerald is large, if it has a pale color or low transparency, it may be valued lower than a smaller emerald with a rich color and high transparency.

Cut

he emerald-specific cut, known as the "emerald cut," was developed considering the gemstone's fragility, helping to prevent pressure and breakage from external forces. To fully bring out the depth of the emerald's color and the characteristics of its crystals, the craftsmanship of skilled artisans is required. The higher the quality of the cut, the higher the value of the gemstone.

Treatment

Emeralds commonly undergo treatment with colorless oil or colorless resin to reduce the visibility of cracks and inclusions. This treatment is believed to enhance the gemstone's natural beauty. However, emeralds altered with colored oil or glass have significantly reduced value. Emeralds with few inclusions and no treatment are extremely rare and highly priced, but caution is needed as there are also low-quality untreated emeralds that are marketed as untreated.

Major Sources of Emeralds

The highest quality emeralds are famously mined in Colombia. Colombian emeralds have a beautiful green color with a slight bluish tint, and high-quality ones may feature a unique pattern known as "Gota de Aceite" (Italian for "oil drop"). Other major sources of emeralds include Zambia, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Madagascar, each with its own distinct characteristics, but Colombian emeralds are particularly highly regarded.

The criteria for evaluating emeralds?

About the quality evaluation of emeralds.

Emeralds are evaluated based on a comprehensive assessment of color, transparency, inclusions, and cut shape. Among these factors, color has the most significant impact on the quality of the emerald, with deeper green shades being more highly valued. Additionally, emeralds with fewer inclusions and a well-executed emerald cut that enhances the color are more likely to fetch a higher price.

About emeralds treatments and processing.

Emeralds are gemstones that are prone to scratching, so many of the emeralds in circulation undergo impregnation treatment to enhance their transparency. Emeralds that have not been treated are referred to as "Non-Oil Emeralds" and are extremely rare, often traded at high prices.

About the origin of emeralds.

Colombia is a representative source of emeralds, and it is said that more than half of the emeralds in circulation worldwide are mined in Colombia. Colombian emeralds are known for their high color quality and transparency, and they are of superior quality with strong brand recognition. When selling Colombian emeralds, it is advisable to have a certificate of authenticity that indicates the origin.

Color of Emeralds with High Price Purchase Evaluation

Deep Green Colombian Emeralds

The deep green color, characteristic of high-quality and luxurious emeralds, is a mark of distinction. Emeralds mined in Colombia, particularly from the Muzo and Chivor mines, are considered top-tier and are traded at high prices.

Yellowish Zimbabwean Emeralds

The emeralds from Zimbabwe, also known as "Sandawana Emeralds," have a vivid deep green color with a unique yellowish tint. Many of these emeralds have few scratches and are not subjected to impregnation treatment.

Bluish Green Zambian Emeralds

Zambian emeralds have few inclusions, with a uniform color and exceptional beauty. They also have high transparency, and their color is a bluish-green. In recent years, the popularity of Zambian emeralds has increased, and their overall price has been rising.

Emeralds are known as the gemstone cherished by Cleopatra of ancient Egypt and are also famous as the birthstone for May. Characterized by their vivid green color and high transparency, Colombian emeralds are particularly highly regarded. Compared to other gemstones, emeralds tend to have more internal fractures, making clarity a critical evaluation point. At Otakaraya, we are actively purchasing emerald jewelry at high prices. Our expert appraisers accurately assess their quality and rarity.

The GG (Graduate Gemologist) qualification is a prestigious gemologist certification awarded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), recognized globally as one of the most authoritative credentials. At Otakaraya, we have staff members who hold the GG qualification, and we also provide regular gemologist training through our in-house educational program. As a result, we are capable of performing highly accurate and high-level assessments of all types of gemstones.

01

UV-Visible Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer

When visible light (light that can be seen by the human eye) passes through a substance, some of the light is absorbed by the material. The UV-Visible Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer is excellent at analyzing the wavelengths of the absorbed light. At 'Otakaraya,' this instrument is used to inspect treatments applied to diamonds and the treatments on gold-based white pearls, allowing for accurate assessment of the gem's value.

02

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer

The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer is a precision instrument that analyzes samples by shining infrared light onto them and measuring the transmitted or reflected light. At 'Otakaraya,' this equipment is used for a wide range of tests, including examining the presence of resin impregnation treatments in jade and conducting specific tests on diamonds.

03

Type I and Type II Determiner

The sample is placed inside the determiner, and ultraviolet light is applied to assess the diamond by its transmission rate. In just one second, the device can determine whether the diamond is Type I (natural diamond) or Type II (high-temperature, high-pressure treated diamond or synthetic diamond). The device can assess both loose diamonds and diamonds set in a setting, allowing for measurement without removing the stone from the setting. It provides quick and accurate evaluation without damaging your items.

04

Moissanite Determiner

After cleaning the surface of the gemstone, the probe is applied to the sample. The electrical conductivity measured by the device is used to determine whether the stone is a diamond or moissanite. Similar to the Type I and II determiner, it provides instant and accurate assessments.

03   Evaluation of Design and Brand Value

At Otakaraya, we not only assess the intrinsic value of the gemstones themselves but also take into account the brand value and design when determining the appraisal value.

We ensure that even small gemstones are thoroughly evaluated, and we can offer a purchase regardless of whether the item has accessories or a box.

04   All Fees Are Free for Purchase

Appraisal fee is completely free, with no burden placed on the customer.

About Emerald Certificates

What Are Grading Reports and Certificates?

When purchasing a gemstone, it may come with a gemological certificate identifying its origin and type based on scientific testing or a grading report indicating its quality and grade. Ideally, these documents should be kept together with the gemstone when selling it, although they are often misplaced or lost over time. Some people assume that gemstones without grading reports receive lower appraisal prices. However, at OTAKARAYA, we are also able to provide competitive appraisal prices for gemstones even without accompanying documentation.

How to Read a Emerald Grading Report

When purchasing an emerald, a certificate of origin and type, which indicates the origin and nature of the stone, is usually provided. If you have this certificate, please bring it along when selling the gemstone. However, at Otakaraya, we accept purchases even without a certificate of authenticity or origin, so there is no need to request a reissuance.

Grading reports can be reissued.

Even if you lose your grading report, it can usually be reissued through organisations such as the Central Gem Laboratory (CGL) or the GIA. However, reissuing a grading report may require additional fees of approximately SGD 20–100, as well as time and effort. If the diamond is set in a ring, there is also a risk of damage when removing the stone for inspection. Since grading reports themselves do not directly determine the value of a gemstone, we recommend choosing a trusted appraisal company with strong expertise and reliable evaluation standards.

The staff includes holders of the GG (Graduate Gemologist) qualification.

The G.G. (Graduate Gemologist) qualification awarded by the GIA is internationally recognised as one of the most respected credentials in the field of gemology. Because of this expertise, our appraisers are able to provide accurate and reliable evaluations even without a grading report. If you are unsure about the appraisal price, you are welcome to start with an appraisal only. All appraisals at OTAKARAYA are completely free of charge.

Customers without a certificate of appraisal

It is possible to make a purchase even without a certificate of appraisal. At "Otakaraya," our appraisers, who have completed specialized training, will conduct the evaluation. You can rely on us with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Emerald Purchase

When is the best time to sell diamonds?

The best time to sell diamonds can vary. Sometimes, the right opportunity arises quickly, while at other times, holding onto them for a longer period can increase their value. It is difficult to pinpoint a universally ideal time. If you plan to keep your diamonds for a longer duration before selling, it is essential to store them properly. We recommend using appropriate storage methods and performing regular maintenance to preserve their condition.

Can I sell diamonds without a certificate?

Yes, you can. Our appraisers will evaluate the diamond 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut) and provide you with a purchase price.

Does the design affect the purchase price?

For gemstone purchases, the grade of the diamond itself is crucial. Even with an older design, Otakaraya ensures a high-value purchase, so you can rest assured.

Does the shape of the diamond affect the purchase price?

Yes, the purchase price varies by shape. The "round brilliant cut" is the most highly valued cut for diamonds. The purchase price also changes depending on the diamond's grade, so feel free to take advantage of our free appraisal service.

Do specialty gemstone purchase shops offer higher prices?

At Otakaraya, we handle a wide range of items, including diamonds, gemstones, jewelry, gold, precious metals, branded items, and watches. This extensive sales network allows us to avoid holding excess inventory, enabling us to offer the highest possible prices for your items.

Can melee diamonds (pavé diamonds) be purchased?

Yes, they can be purchased. Jewelry adorned with melee diamonds (pavé diamonds) may receive a higher appraisal value. However, loose stones may not be eligible for purchase.
