Advice for High-Price Ruby Purchase and Appraisal

In the purchase of rubies, the intensity of the color is the most important factor, with brighter red hues and greater transparency increasing the value. Given the high market prices for gold and platinum, now is a great time to sell accessories with gemstones. Since gemstones can degrade over time, it's ideal to sell them as early as possible.

Factors that Determine the Value of Rubies

Color

The most important factor in determining the value of a ruby, often referred to as the "queen of gemstones," is its color. Ruby is the red variety of corundum, a crystal made of aluminum oxide, while other colors of corundum are called sapphires. The highest quality rubies are almost free of impurities, featuring vivid, high-saturation red colors, or slightly purplish-red hues. Among them, the deep red with a hint of blue, known as "Pigeon Blood," is especially highly valued. On the other hand, rubies with an orange tint or those that are too purple are considered less valuable.

Clarity

Rubies generally contain many inclusions. Rubies with fewer inclusions have higher transparency, and their beautiful red glow increases their rarity and value. An exception is the "Star Ruby," which contains needle-like rutile crystals known as silk inclusions. These rubies emit a star-shaped light and are particularly highly valued.

Carat

The value of a ruby, like other colored gemstones, is assessed based on factors such as color, clarity, and cut. For rubies of the same quality, a larger carat weight will typically result in a higher price. Especially large rubies are extremely rare, and once they exceed 1 carat, their price increases significantly. The price difference between a 0.8-carat and a 1-carat ruby of the same quality can sometimes be as much as 11 times.

Treatment

Gemstones may undergo treatments to enhance their color and appearance, in addition to cutting and polishing. For rubies, heat treatment is recognized as a method to enhance color vibrancy and bring out their natural beauty. Most rubies undergo heat treatment, but those that are untreated are rare and command higher prices. On the other hand, rubies that have been subjected to diffusion treatment or lead glass filling have a lower value.

Origin

The finest rubies come from Myanmar (formerly Burma), with those from the Mogok region being particularly famous. Rubies from this area are known for their high transparency and deep, beautiful red color. They also have the unique characteristic of glowing intensely red under ultraviolet light. The rubies referred to as "Pigeon Blood" come from this region and are highly prized. In recent years, vivid red rubies have also been mined in Tanzania from the Windsor and Montepuez mines, and these are now valued alongside rubies from Myanmar (formerly Burma).

The criteria for evaluating Rubies?

Ruby Quality Evaluation

The quality of a ruby is evaluated based on factors such as its color, brilliance, and size. Among these, color is particularly important, with deeper hues being valued more highly.

Ruby Processing Treatments

Most ruby rough stones lack transparency, and nearly all rubies on the market have undergone heat treatment. The heating method varies depending on the origin and quality of the ruby, and the performance of the heating equipment and the skill of the technician also influence the final result.

Ruby Origins

The sources of rubies are limited to regions such as Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Among these, Myanmar rubies are known for their high quality, and the finest rubies, referred to as "Pigeon Blood Rubies," are mined in the Mogok region of Myanmar.

Color of Rubies with High Price Purchase Evaluation

Red Color

Among rubies, those with vivid red or deep purplish-red hues command higher prices.

Pigeon Blood

This term refers to rubies with a vivid red color resembling the fresh blood of a pigeon. Compared to other rubies, a 1-carat Pigeon Blood ruby can fetch over ten times the price, making it highly valuable for purchase.

Cherry Pink

These rubies have very high transparency and a bright tone similar to pink sapphires, which makes them quite popular.

Beef Blood

Mostly found in Thailand, these rubies have a dark red color resembling beef blood. They contain a high level of iron, giving them a slightly blackened appearance. Although they do not have high transparency, they are highly valued for their luxury and rarity.

02 Latest appraisal equipment of Otakaraya

UV-Visible Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer

When visible light (light that can be seen by the human eye) passes through a substance, some of the light is absorbed by the material. The UV-Visible Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer is excellent at analyzing the wavelengths of the absorbed light. At 'Otakaraya,' this instrument is used to inspect treatments applied to diamonds and the treatments on gold-based white pearls, allowing for accurate assessment of the gem's value.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer

The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer is a precision instrument that analyzes samples by shining infrared light onto them and measuring the transmitted or reflected light. At 'Otakaraya,' this equipment is used for a wide range of tests, including examining the presence of resin impregnation treatments in jade and conducting specific tests on diamonds.

Type I and Type II Determiner

The sample is placed inside the determiner, and ultraviolet light is applied to assess the diamond by its transmission rate. In just one second, the device can determine whether the diamond is Type I (natural diamond) or Type II (high-temperature, high-pressure treated diamond or synthetic diamond). The device can assess both loose diamonds and diamonds set in a setting, allowing for measurement without removing the stone from the setting. It provides quick and accurate evaluation without damaging your items.

Moissanite Determiner

After cleaning the surface of the gemstone, the probe is applied to the sample. The electrical conductivity measured by the device is used to determine whether the stone is a diamond or moissanite. Similar to the Type I and II determiner, it provides instant and accurate assessments.

03 Evaluation of Design and Brand Value

At Otakaraya, we not only assess the intrinsic value of the gemstones themselves but also take into account the brand value and design when determining the appraisal value. We ensure that even small gemstones are thoroughly evaluated, and we can offer a purchase regardless of whether the item has accessories or a box.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ruby Purchases

When is the best time to sell diamonds?
The best time to sell diamonds can vary. Sometimes, the right opportunity arises quickly, while at other times, holding onto them for a longer period can increase their value. It is difficult to pinpoint a universally ideal time. If you plan to keep your diamonds for a longer duration before selling, it is essential to store them properly. We recommend using appropriate storage methods and performing regular maintenance to preserve their condition.
Can I sell diamonds without a certificate?
Yes, you can. Our appraisers will evaluate the diamond 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut) and provide you with a purchase price.
Does the design affect the purchase price?
For gemstone purchases, the grade of the diamond itself is crucial. Even with an older design, Otakaraya ensures a high-value purchase, so you can rest assured.
Does the shape of the diamond affect the purchase price?
Yes, the purchase price varies by shape. The "round brilliant cut" is the most highly valued cut for diamonds. The purchase price also changes depending on the diamond's grade, so feel free to take advantage of our free appraisal service.
Do specialty gemstone purchase shops offer higher prices?
At Otakaraya, we handle a wide range of items, including diamonds, gemstones, jewelry, gold, precious metals, branded items, and watches. This extensive sales network allows us to avoid holding excess inventory, enabling us to offer the highest possible prices for your items.
Can melee diamonds (pavé diamonds) be purchased?
Yes, they can be purchased. Jewelry adorned with melee diamonds (pavé diamonds) may receive a higher appraisal value. However, loose stones may not be eligible for purchase.
